My Story
I moved to New York City in 1976 to pursue my life's passion as a dancer and choreographer. The city had become a global center for the dance world and collaborative arts. However, my hopes and dreams would immediately face intense challenges as I suffered a major injury that threatened my ability to perform. All of the excitement I felt about being in the city was quickly overshadowed by a feeling of hopelessness.
Immobilized by back pain, multiple doctors told m my only option would be to stop moving and quit dancing. I had a hunch my pain was due to poor training, so I began to seek out a way to retrain my physical habits. When I discovered the Alexander Technique, I immediately knew it would help me get to the underlying cause of my injury.
While I studied the Alexander Technique, I found a trained aromatherapist who understood the power behind using pure essential oils to curb anxiety and depression. I credit these two healing modalities with restoring my mobility and my dance career.
The success of my own experience prompted me to go deeper into these two self-healing methods and build a private practice in NYC. I apprenticed under many of the world's most respected Alexander Technique teachers, and learned the secrets of ancient aromatherapy from the renowned Chinese herbalist, acupuncturist, and Daoist scholar Jeffrey Yuen L.Ac. His teachings prompted me to build a line of remedies to offer my clients more support for their pain, sleep, stress, and movement issues.
In 2008, I launched my line of H. Gillerman Organics essential oil remedies - suitable for spa treatments, as well as for at-home self-care.
Today
With my forty+ years experience as a certified Alexander Technique instructor, I continue to use my dance and movement background in my private practice to support people living with pain, movement dysfunction and postural balance issues. I work with musicians, visual artist and crafters to help them recover from or avoid repetitive strain injuries.
A faculty member at numerous theater schools (Harvard and Boston University), I help actors to develop physical presence and avoid body problems. I work with sports and fitness enthusiasts to reduce strain, stiffness or injury. For people whose jobs or lifestyle (like gardening) is taking a toll on their health and wellbeing I identify poor movement choices and address their pain head on. In this way, I am able to tailor my sessions to my client's unique issues, interests, and abilities for optimal health and healing.
Learning the Alexander Technique is an empowering and healing process that enriches every aspect of your life. I invite you to schedule a free consultation with me on the phone so we can discuss the best way for you to improve your wellbeing today.
